Autonomy and

Mission Systems

The NX3 platform is built upon the industry-standard Cube flight controller architecture, providing a proven foundation for autonomous flight operations. Leveraging mature and widely adopted autopilot technology, NX3 is capable of executing complex missions including waypoint navigation, automated take-off and landing, geofenced operations, failsafe procedures, return-to-home functionality, and advanced flight safety features.

While the Cube flight controller delivers a highly capable and reliable autonomy core, the NX3 software development team is actively developing a suite of advanced software capabilities that extend beyond the traditional scope of a flight controller. These developments focus on enhancing mission effectiveness, operational resilience, safety assurance, payload integration, communications management, and operator decision support. By building intelligent software layers above the flight control system, NX3 aims to transform a capable autonomous aircraft into a fully integrated mission platform designed for demanding commercial, industrial, security, and defence applications.

This approach allows NX3 to retain the reliability and interoperability benefits of industry-standard flight control technology whilst introducing next-generation mission management, autonomous behaviours, and operational capabilities tailored to the evolving needs of modern unmanned systems.

Autonomy Layer

At the core of the NX3 platform is the industry-proven Cube flight controller, providing a comprehensive suite of autonomous flight and safety functions. These capabilities include fully autonomous waypoint navigation, automated take-off and landing, geofencing, mission execution, return-to-launch procedures, lost-link behaviours, battery failsafes, flight envelope protection, and a range of configurable contingency actions designed to maintain safe operation in the event of system failures or unexpected conditions.

Whilst these capabilities provide a robust foundation for autonomous flight, the NX3 Mission Autonomy Layer is being developed to extend the aircraft’s decision-making and operational resilience beyond the traditional capabilities of a flight controller. Rather than replacing the underlying autopilot, the Mission Autonomy Layer works alongside it, continuously assessing mission conditions, environmental factors, sensor inputs, and system health to provide additional layers of safety, intelligence, and mission assurance.

The first phase of development is focused on enhancing operational resilience in GNSS-degraded and GNSS-denied environments. These advanced capabilities are intended to support continued safe operation when C2 link and satellite navigation data becomes unavailable, degraded, or unreliable.

Navigation Resilience

Modern unmanned systems face increasing challenges from GNSS interference, signal degradation, spoofing and environmental limitations. The NX3 software architecture is being developed to support multiple navigation sources and intelligent sensor fusion, enabling the aircraft to maintain situational awareness and navigation confidence under a wide range of operating conditions.

Future navigation capabilities may include visual navigation, LiDAR-assisted positioning, terrain-referenced navigation, inertial navigation enhancements and navigation confidence monitoring.

Mission Assurance

Mission success depends upon more than simply keeping an aircraft airborne. The NX3 Mission Assurance framework continuously monitors aircraft health, power systems, communications, navigation performance and payload status to identify emerging risks before they become mission-critical events.

By analysing system performance in real time, NX3 can recommend, initiate or execute predefined contingency actions designed to maximise mission success whilst maintaining operational safety.

The ground-based Pilot Interface delivers comprehensive aircraft telemetry and mission data through an intuitive user interface, ensuring the UAS pilot maintains real-time awareness of system health, flight status, and operational conditions.

Communication Resilience

Reliable communications are critical to safe and effective unmanned operations. NX3 supports a modular communications architecture allowing operators to integrate different radio technologies according to mission requirements.

The software framework is being developed to manage multiple communication pathways, support autonomous lost-link procedures and maintain mission continuity when connectivity is interrupted.

SafetyHub

SafetyHub currently in early prototype development provides the UAS operator with a real-time safety interface for aircraft monitoring and flight analysis.

Designed around a human-in-the-loop philosophy, SafetyHub presents critical operational information in a clear and intuitive format, helping operators maintain awareness of aircraft status, navigation health, communications performance and mission progress.

Payload Interface

Payload Integration

NX3 has been designed as a mission platform rather than a single-purpose aircraft. The software architecture enables seamless integration of payloads including sensors, cameras, communications equipment, delivery systems and specialist mission equipment.

Through standardised interfaces and mission-aware software, payloads can interact directly with the aircraft and autonomy systems to enable more intelligent mission execution.

Software Architecture

The NX3 software ecosystem is built using a modular architecture that allows new capabilities to be introduced without redesigning the entire platform. This approach accelerates development, simplifies maintenance and enables rapid integration of future technologies as operational requirements evolve.

The architecture is designed to support new sensors, payloads, autonomy functions and mission applications throughout the operational life of the aircraft.

Intelligence

Every NX3 mission generates valuable operational data. The platform records mission activity, aircraft performance, system events and environmental information to support analysis, compliance, training and continuous improvement.

This data-driven approach enables organisations to better understand platform performance, optimise operations and build evidence to support future regulatory and operational requirements
