The

Design Process

How NX3 gets built — from a problem worth solving to a platform you can trust.

NX3 didn’t start with a drone. It started with a problem.

Years of flying demanding aerial operations – remote locations, hostile weather, no margin for failure – taught us where off-the-shelf aircraft quietly let you down. Not in the showroom, but at the edge: when the signal drops, when the wind turns, when the mission asks for more than the airframe was ever designed to give. NX3 is our answer to that gap. It is a platform built from the field backward, by people who have had to make aircraft work in places where “send it back to the manufacturer” was never an option.

This page is about how we build it. Not the marketing version, the actual process, including the parts that took a number of attempts to get right.

What guides the

Decision Process

Before a single component is chosen, four principles decide whether it earns its place on the aircraft.

Trust by design. A platform is only as good as your confidence in what it’s doing and why. We build toward autonomy and avionics that are controllable, auditable, and understood from the ground up – not a black box you have to take on faith. If we can’t explain what the aircraft is doing, it doesn’t fly.

Resilience where it counts. Real operations don’t happen in perfect conditions. NX3 is designed to keep working when the easy assumptions break – when satellite navigation is denied, jammed, or simply unavailable, and when the environment is actively working against you. Graceful behaviour under failure matters more to us than headline numbers in ideal conditions.

One airframe, many missions. The same engineering discipline that serves a demanding civil or commercial task – survey, inspection, emergency response, cinematography in places nothing else can reach – is the discipline that serves the most serious operational work. We design for that breadth deliberately. A capability proven in one domain strengthens it in all the others.

Built to be built. A clever prototype that can’t be manufactured repeatably is a hobby, not a product. From early concept we ask how each design choice affects manufacturability, maintainability, and the supply chain behind it. The aim is always a platform that can be produced at quality and at scale – with an evolving movement towards full sovereign capability – not a one-off that only its creator can keep flying.

The Process

Stage by stage

Our 5 stage process.

Evolution and

The Generations

The clearest way to understand our process is to look at what it has produced. NX3 has evolved across distinct generations, and each one is heavier on capability and lighter on compromise than the last.

Generation 1 proved the concept could fly and do useful work. It was capable – and, frankly, heavier and more conservative than it needed to be. It taught us where the real weight and complexity were hiding.

Generation 2 was where the platform grew up. Significant weight came out of the airframe, performance climbed, and the design matured from “it works” into “it works well.” Just as importantly, Gen 2 exposed the next set of limits – the ones you can only find once the obvious problems are solved.

Generation 3, our current focus, is the most ambitious step yet: a meaningfully lighter airframe, greater performance across the board, and a far more capable autonomy and navigation layer designed to keep the aircraft trustworthy in contested and signal-denied environments.

Every gram saved is a gram returned to endurance, payload, or resilience.

This isn’t iteration for its own sake. It’s a deliberate climb up the maturity ladder, proving the core platform to a high level of operational readiness while advancing the harder, newer autonomy capabilities right behind it.

The Engineering

that matters

A few areas where the process has demanded the most from us:

A lighter, stronger airframe. Weight is the enemy of everything good in a flying machine. Each generation has driven structural mass down without surrendering strength, because every kilogram removed buys back endurance, payload, and safety margin. Getting that trade right is slow, unglamorous, and worth it.

Resilient navigation. We’ve invested heavily in keeping NX3 aware of where it is and what it’s doing when conventional satellite positioning can’t be relied upon – through alternative sensing and intelligent fusion of multiple independent sources. A platform that only works when the sky is cooperating isn’t a platform we’d stake a mission on.

Sovereign, auditable autonomy. The intelligence of the aircraft sits on a foundation we control and understand. That means autonomy you can trust, inspect, and stand behind – not capability borrowed from somewhere you can’t see into. For serious operators, that trust is the whole point.

Propulsion and power. Endurance and reliability live and die here. We design the propulsion and power architecture as a system, not a parts list, balancing thrust, efficiency, weight, and the realities of keeping an aircraft serviceable in the field.

Tighten the design

How we test

We test in the real world, not just the lab. Controlled flights, instrumented and repeatable, build up an honest picture of how the platform behaves across the conditions it’s actually meant to face. We’d rather find a weakness ourselves, on our own terms, than have an operator find it for us. Every campaign tightens the design.

Who we build with

NX3 is sharpened by the people around it. We work with universities and research partners on the hard engineering problems, and with industry collaborators who bring depth we’d be foolish to try to replicate alone. Good design is a conversation – and the best ideas rarely arrive from a single mind in a single room.

Get Involved

NX3 is a moving programme, and it gets better the more good people are around it.

If you’re a researcher, an engineer, an operator, or an organisation working on problems that overlap with ours – resilient autonomy, navigation in denied environments, lightweight aerospace structures, advanced propulsion, or real-world operational integration – we’d like to hear from you.

If you simply want to follow where this goes, you’re welcome here too.

A reliable heavy-lift platform

As a pilot, engineer and innovator, with over 30 years flying experience, I have first hand experience of what’s lacking in commercial UAVs and we’ve designed and built NX3 to address those nuances.

A large number of UAVs I fly today have operational nuances and nine years ago, I took it upon myself to learn as much as I could about aircraft design, CAD and manufacturing. Eight years ago, I designed my first UAV in CAD, sent the files away and eagerly awaited the parts to arrive, so that we could start on the build.

Since then, me and my team have built over 18 UAVs, ranging from film and television to defence and logistics.

NX3 is designed to deliver reliable, heavy-lift capability in environments where access, safety and precision matter most.

NX3 is a UK-designed, dual-use, heavy-lift autonomous UAS platform engineered to meet the evolving demands of defence, special operations, and mission-critical logistics.

Developed by the Aerialworx team, NX3 bridges the gap between commercially available drones and high-cost military systems, delivering a modular, scalable, and rapidly deployable solution built for real-world environments where reliability, adaptability, and performance are non-negotiable.

Designed and Manufactured in UK

Made in Wales

Proudly designed, engineered, and built in Wales, the platform is developed and manufactured through a predominantly UK-based supply chain, drawing on trusted local suppliers and specialist partners. This approach combines proven British engineering capability with advanced aerospace technologies to deliver a robust, scalable heavy-lift unmanned system. Whether enabling critical medical logistics, supporting defence and security operations, or optimising complex cargo transport, the platform establishes a new benchmark in safe, autonomous, high-capacity aerial lift.
